Portfolio Submission
Applicants must submit 15–20 original works demonstrating both technical ability and creative expression.
The portfolio should include 3 sections:
At least 1 piece of Observation Drawing
At least 4 pieces of 2D Drawings — Digital or traditional
10–15 Creative Works — May include character designs, concept art, illustrations, storyboards, animations, 3D works, or mixed-media projects*
(Students may select the types of work to submit and are not required to include all the above categories.)
*For students who choose to submit 3D work: Submission for 3D works should include renders of fully textured 3D characters, props and environments. Where applicable, 3D works should be accompanied by works in progress to demonstrate your work process, including wireframe, blockout, or grey-box stage.
Note:
Applicants may include no more than 2 anime/manga-style pieces.
Portfolios should demonstrate originality, creativity, and a clear artistic process.
Please refrain from submitting imitations of stylized artwork or characters produced by other modern artists or entertainment franchises.
Where applicable, applicants must cite the use of Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, in their works.
Portfolio Requirements Explained
(A) Observational Drawing
Observational drawing are artworks created by directly observing a live physical subject, such as a model, object, or environment. Artworks should be drawn in traditional media such as pencil, marker pen, charcoal, etc. on a full page, in black and white (no color).
Submissions must not be drawn from photographs, memory, or imagination.
The focus is on careful observation and accurate representation of the chosen subject through effective rendering shape, proportion, form, light, and shadow.
Note: Generative AI tools are strictly prohibited for Observational Drawing submissions.
(B) 2D Drawings
This category refers to any form of visual art created on a two-dimensional surface, such as paper or canvas, using either traditional or digital media.
Artwork should demonstrate a basic understanding of composition, design, and layout, while effectively depicting structure, volume, and depth in the chosen subject matter.
Most importantly, the work should communicate the artist’s creative expression and visual intent.
Note: Generative AI tools are not permitted for 2D Drawing submissions.
(C) Creative Work
Creative work transforms original visual or narrative ideas into tangible form—whether static, moving, or spatial. It must demonstrate an artist's imagination, technical concept, and unique personal voice to communicate mood and solve visual problems.
This may include:
- Character designs and concept art
- Fine art and digital illustrations
- Storyboards
- 2D and 3D animations
- 3D models or environments
- Mixed-media artwork
Artwork must be presented clearly, either individually on a full page or thoughtfully combined on a single page with a clear, readable layout.
Note: Generative AI tools may be used for Creative Works only. Applicants must clearly declare and cite any use of Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in their submitted work.
